The most common kayak machine screw used for heavy duty attachments is the 1/4″-20. Machines screws either screw into an existing brass insert or are used with a washer and nut.
If you are using machines screws on a kayak. ONLY USE STAINLESS MACHINE SCREWS. Any other normal screw that you buy from the hardware store will rust and it will be really hard to get it loose once it does.
1/4″ is the diameter and 20 is the thread size. Once you go smaller, the sizes change from 1/4″ diameter to size diameters starting with #14 and going down to #12, #10, #8 and so on. A #14 is smaller in diameter than 1/4″. Everything larger than 1/4″ is described using inch fractions.
Although it is easy to buy machines screws from Home Depot and other places in small packages, buying small packages is very expensive compared to buying in bulk.
